A Few Tips Before You Buy: Snatch Blocks
Posted by Jamel Taylor on Aug 21st 2024
Snatch blocks are the most popular way to increase your pulling power. You probably have a few of them in your toolboxes already but if you don't you might want to get a couple of them to have on hand for those jobs where you need to add some pulling power. Before you buy, make sure you've considered a few essential details:
What is the job? |
When deciding whether a snatch block is the way to go, you need to think about the type of job you're doing. Are you lifting overhead, towing horizontally, are you dragging out of a ditch, or out of the woods? What is the weight of the object you are trying to pull? This is a versatile tool and you would be surprised how many applications it has. As long as you don't exceed the weight load limit, pull or lift at the right angles, and use the right size cable or rope, you should be able to get many years out of a good block. |

Choose your block. |
The right snatch block will be rated at double the pull of the winch. Once you have chosen the winch, choose the snatch block. Order the block by choosing your wire rope size. It is best to have a snatch block for every scenario on-hand so you're never unprepared. Getting a full set of snatch blocks at one time, therefore, is the smartest investment. |

Inspect first! |
As you know, an old or faulty block can cause accidents and further damage to vehicles. A quick safety inspection beforehand to make sure your snatch block is up to the task is vital and will help extend the overall life of your blocks. Make sure the sheave spins freely and doesn't have any burs that may damage your cable. Make sure there are no signs of wear on pins, side plates and bushings. Make sure the sheave pins are aligned properly and the block is properly lubricated. |
